CORE 52 - Chapter 18: "Blessedness"

In Chapter 18 of CORE 52, titled "Blessedness," Mark Moore explores the biblical concept of being "blessed" as it is portrayed throughout the Scriptures, particularly in the teachings of Jesus. Moore contrasts the world’s understanding of blessedness—often associated with material success, happiness, and good fortune—with the biblical view, which emphasizes spiritual well-being, joy in relationship with God, and fulfillment through living in accordance with His will.

Moore begins by focusing on the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-12), where Jesus describes the traits of those who are blessed. These blessings are not based on external circumstances but on inner qualities, such as humility, mercy, purity, and a thirst for righteousness. The chapter explains that true blessedness is about aligning one’s life with God’s kingdom values, living out these qualities, and receiving God's approval and favor, which is far more profound than worldly blessings.

Moore also touches on the distinction between temporary happiness and lasting blessedness, suggesting that while the world may equate blessedness with material wealth, comfort, or success, God’s view of blessedness is about living a life marked by spiritual depth and alignment with His kingdom. This chapter challenges readers to reconsider their priorities and values in light of the true blessedness that comes from following Jesus.

Application:

  • Reflect on what it means to be truly "blessed" according to Jesus’ teachings in the Beatitudes. How does this view of blessedness differ from worldly definitions?

  • Consider how you can cultivate the qualities of the blessed person (humility, mercy, purity, etc.) in your own life. How can you live out the principles of God's kingdom to experience the fullness of blessedness?

Five Daily Spiritual Challenges:

  1. Day 1: Rethink Blessedness Spend time today reflecting on the difference between worldly happiness and the blessedness that comes from God. Read Matthew 5:3-12 and meditate on how Jesus redefines what it means to be truly blessed. Ask God to help you align your life with His kingdom values, rather than the world's standards.

  2. Day 2: Cultivate Humility The first Beatitude says, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3). Reflect on the meaning of humility and how it is central to being blessed. Spend time today practicing humility in your interactions with others, acknowledging your dependence on God.

  3. Day 3: Show Mercy Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Reflect on how mercy plays a role in your life. Is there someone you need to extend mercy to today, whether through forgiveness, compassion, or understanding? Ask God to help you show mercy as He has shown mercy to you.

  4. Day 4: Pursue Righteousness Jesus also said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness” (Matthew 5:6). Reflect on your own desires for righteousness—both personal holiness and justice in the world. Ask God to deepen your hunger and thirst for righteousness, and take active steps to pursue it in your thoughts, actions, and relationships.

  5. Day 5: Rejoice in Persecution The final Beatitude says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). While persecution is not something most seek, it can deepen our relationship with God. Reflect on how you can rejoice and stand firm in your faith, even when facing difficulties or opposition because of your beliefs.

Daily Thought-Provoking Questions:

  1. Day 1: How do you define blessedness? How does the biblical definition of blessedness challenge your understanding of happiness and success?

  2. Day 2: How can humility transform your relationships with others and your relationship with God? In what ways can you actively practice humility today?

  3. Day 3: Who in your life might you need to extend mercy to? How does Jesus’ example of mercy motivate you to show compassion to others?

  4. Day 4: How do you hunger and thirst for righteousness? What specific actions can you take today to align your life with God’s standards of justice, holiness, and truth?

  5. Day 5: When facing opposition or persecution for your faith, how can you embrace the blessedness Jesus speaks of? How can you stand firm in your faith, trusting that God’s kingdom is worth more than earthly comfort?

Chapter 18 of CORE 52 invites readers to reframe their understanding of blessedness. It encourages us to live in light of the Beatitudes, focusing on humility, mercy, righteousness, and a deep relationship with God rather than seeking worldly success or pleasure. This chapter calls us to live out the values of God's kingdom, trusting that true blessedness is found in a life surrendered to Jesus, even amidst hardship and opposition.
